RISK

Our Risk teams develop comprehensive processes to monitor, assess, and manage the risk of expected and unexpected events that may have an adverse impact on the firm. Risk professionals carry out critical day-to-day risk management activities, lead projects, and contribute to the ongoing advancement of a robust risk management program. Effective coordination with executive management, business units, control departments, and technology is critical to success.

WORKOUT & RESTRUCTURING TEAM

The Workout & Restructuring (W&R) team is a specialist group within Credit Risk (CR) that has primary responsibility for (i) managing the firm’s distressed and defaulted credit positions to maximize recoveries, and (ii) evaluating and structuring new transactions with distressed counterparties. The team is based primarily in New York, Salt Lake City, London, and Frankfurt to ensure global coverage of the portfolio. All major industries are represented, including consumer and retail, natural resources, financial services, TMT, and real estate. All major business lines are covered, including Investment Banking, the Asset Management Division, Global Markets, and Private Wealth Management.

Workout & Restructuring team members are generalists, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on distressed restructurings and recapitalizations across the capital structure in various geographies within EMEA and APAC and across multiple industries.

Tasks

  • Represent Goldman in complex debt restructurings involving multiple stakeholders (creditors, sponsors, management teams, external advisors)
  • Conduct in-depth credit analysis, including a review of industry fundamentals, cash flows, qualitative factors, and the likelihood of default, and formulate or recommend workout strategies to maximize recoveries
  • Identify early warning signs when a credit begins to show signs of weakness and escalate them to senior leadership so that the firm can proactively take action and mitigate downside risks, as appropriate
  • Monitor the performance of counterparties in the distressed Watch List portfolio, including compliance with repayment terms and covenants
  • Represent the team or firm in interactions with regulators and external auditors regarding names on the watchlist, including provisioning levels and workout strategies
  • Act as a mentor for junior team members. Develop and manage relationships with other areas of the firm, including Investment Banking/Capital Markets, Sales & Trading, Operations, Collateral Management, Legal, Compliance, and Technology

Profile / Your qualification / Your personality

  • Minimum of 8–10 years of experience managing/leading complex debt restructurings across the capital structure in various jurisdictions in EMEA/APAC
  • A demonstrable track record spanning multiple years of independent decision-making, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in team settings.
  • Advanced corporate finance, restructuring, and financial accounting skills
  • Strong background in assessing legal documentation, including waivers, amendments, restructuring agreements, and related documents such as engagement letters for the appointment of external advisors
  • Ability to lead and motivate diverse deal teams, providing guidance to and supervising junior team members.
  • Ability to communicate with senior leadership at Goldman Sachs, both within and outside of Credit Risk.
  • Strong academic background, ideally with a master’s degree in finance, engineering, economics, or other quantitative fields
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to influence others and build consensus
